Artist Statement
The central idea of my concentration explores color, angle, line, shape to manipulate planes and focal points. I am interested in creating patterns that are pleasing and intriguing. I am using the materials acrylic paint on square canvas to create further connection between the pieces.
Each piece in my concentration is a reflection of the exploration of this idea because each piece slightly alters the line size, line shape, and overall color scheme while staying true to similar materials and concepts. The fact that some of my pieces overlap lines and others don't gives more visual interest. Blue is used in each of my pieces, which pulls them all together. I will continue to explore this concentration with an eye on detail and perception.

Artist Response

The artist that I chose to research is Frank Stella. He was born in 1936, grew up in Massachusetts, majored in history at Princeton, then moved to NYC. He didn't identify himself with the abstract expressionist artists of his time. He liked flat surfaces and objects in his prints and paintings. He simply wanted his painting to be a “flat surface with paint on it – nothing more” (Stella). He later worked with printmaking and sculptures.
I am inspired by his early work which was very geometric. It seems that he is exploring line, movement, and color. A lot of his early pieces are just straight lines or just curved lines with pretty simple color pallets. They are bold yet muted; I find this contrast intriguing.
Frank Stella was inspired by Barnett Newman and Jasper Johns. Artists like Richard Pettibone were inspired by Frank Stella.
