Artist Response
The artist that I chose to research is Frank Stella. He was born in 1936, grew up in Massachusetts, majored in history at Princeton, then moved to NYC. He didn't identify himself with the abstract expressionist artists of his time. He liked flat surfaces and objects in his prints and paintings. He simply wanted his painting to be a “flat surface with paint on it – nothing more” (Stella). He later worked with printmaking and sculptures.
I am inspired by his early work which was very geometric. It seems that he is exploring line, movement, and color. A lot of his early pieces are just straight lines or just curved lines with pretty simple color pallets. They are bold yet muted; I find this contrast intriguing.
Frank Stella was inspired by Barnett Newman and Jasper Johns. Artists like Richard Pettibone were inspired by Frank Stella.
